Upcoming Exhibition: Echo Photographers’ Exhibition

This collection of work reflects the varied nature of subject matter covered by a press photographer working in the North East. Assignments can be of a sensitive nature stressing the need to be much more than just the taker of a picture. Recording the news leads to a high degree of involvement on occasion which influences the image captured. Unlike other fields of photography, there are large restrictions on lighting and venue. Regularly a photo call may be carried out in the middle of the day with the sun high in the sky resulting in high contrasts in light or in a darkened room with a complete lack of light – certainly not conditions you would wish for . Similarly Locations are also often a problem and not something you are given a choice in - messy, cluttered backgrounds will hinder the producing of a image and it can be hard work to make the subject(s) stand out from their surroundings. Such variables result in press photographers being able to think very fast on their feet to adapt to the respective conditions and environment – a skill which is invaluble in the fast moving nature of the profession.

The Northern Echo photographers involved with this exhibiton are Andy Lamb, Chris Booth, Dave Wood, Stuart Boulton and Tom Banks.

The Exhibition runs from the 23rd July to 4th September.

Upcoming Exhibition: Post Industrial – Steel for Ships to Scenic Trips by Richard Grassick

This exhibition marks the passing of long-standing industrial communities in two related towns, Wolsingham in Weardale, and Bremerhaven in northern Germany. Both have become the victim of Europe’s de-industrialisation. Weardale Castings in Wolsingham finally closed in 2008, the SSW Schichau Seebeck Shipyard in Bremerhaven in 2009. These large-format colour prints celebrate the monumental nature of the work that was carried out in Wolsingham and Bremerhaven. Taken in 2003 at the SSW Schichau Seebeck Shipyard, and in 2006 at Wolsingham’s Weardale Castings, they are a final farewell to a way of life.

The Exhibition will be held in the Decisive Moment Gallery, part of the Darlington Media Workshop.

It will run from the 5th June until 3rd August (Check the left-hand column of our website for Opening Times)

Running from the 17th April – 1st June the Decisive Moment Gallery will play host to the Darlington Media Group’s Member’ Exhibition. Entry is free.

The Decisive Moment Gallery is situated in the Media Workshop behind Darlington Arts Centre

This exhibition is about showcasing the talent amongst the members of the Darlington Media Group. Giving them a chance for them to share their creative voice with the General Public. For some this will be their first time exhibiting. For others it will be a chance to display otherwise unseen works.

Guide to Selection of Images for Exhibition Workshop

On Saturday 6th March, experienced photographer, course leader and competition judge Jim Lycett will hold a workshop on editing and printing for any DMG member wanting to submit for the DMG Members’ Exhibition.

Preparing images for public exhibition can be quite daunting. Questions such as “Is my work good enough? What shall I put in? What are my best pictures? Do I need to print, mount and frame?” spring to mind. In addition fears that “I don’t know how to assemble my work” in many cases deter people from exhibiting.

This Saturday morning workshop has been specifically designed for DMG members who have not exhibited before or members who need a boost in confidence and encouragement to exhibit in the forthcoming Members’ Exhibition.

The workshop will cover aspects of choosing the best images for inclusion and appropriate sizes, balancing a panel of images, introduction to selection criteria and print critique in a simple clear and positive way. Members are encouraged to bring along representative images.

Mount Cutting and Framing workshop

On Saturday 20th February an open-ended workshop, primarily designed for DMG members wishing to exhibit in the forthcoming Members’ Exhibition, will be held at the DMG workshop.

This practical workshop will include methods of mounting, single and double aperture mount cutting, framing, mirror plating and much more. There will be ample opportunity for members to cut their own mounts and discuss presentation, curating and labelling.
